Tailing ponds, also called mine dumps, oil sands, culm dumps, tails, leach residue, and retention ponds form as part of the process when materials are separated from valuable minerals and ore. Tailing dams are often the most significant environmental liability for a mining project. Oil sands producers are often fined millions of dollars when their tailing waste kills migratory birds.  But when responsible mining companies operate tailing ponds, they often incorporate the cost of rehabilitation, which includes installing or setting up bird deterrents to help prevent migratory bird kills.

What impact or considerations does tailing ponds have on Migratory birds?

The destructive impact the tar sands industry has had on land/forest globally has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of birds, including protected migratory birds.  Preventing Tailing pond bird kills, including waterfowl, ducks, Sage Grouse and 100’s of other bird species, is good for the environment. 

How do you stop Tailing Pond Bird Kills?

Traditionally energy companies have installed Bird Netting over oil ponds and/or employed high tech audio bird scare devices like the Zon Gun Mark IV propane cannons stationed around the perimeter. Both of these systems can be effective, but have their drawbacks.

Bird Netting is often used over contamination ponds, but is labor intensive and can be very expensive. Moreover, the netting and perimeter support system must be installed correctly to accommodate the heavy ice / snow loads that is typical of tailing pond locations. If you choose to install Bird Netting, it needs to be installed by a professional bird control company with experience installing Netting over tailing ponds.

Audio Bird Deterrents:

The Zon Gun Mark 4 Propane Cannons can also help keep birds away with their loud booming blasts. Zon Gun Bird Scare Cannon's are often used at airports, agricultural farms and mine dumps. When using Zon Gun Mark 4 Cannons make sure you mount them on tripods with timers to increase coverage and effectiveness. The Zon Gun Bird Scare Cannons should also occasionally be moved and have the timing of the blasts randomized to avoid habituation to the predictable cannon sound.

Combine Audio Deterrents with Visual Bird Deterrents

All bird scare products work best when used in combination with each other, as they increase the bird’s fear and flight response to the perceived predator threat. While in most cases the Bird Wailer will prevent oil sand bird kills, it never hurts to incorporate additional bird deterrents.  Along with the Bird Wailer we recommend installing a series of visual bird deterrents above the pond and when possible floating on the water.  If there are cables or lines above the mine dumps, clip on a Holographic Bird Scare Flash Strip, Holographic Bird Scare Flash Strip, Dead Crow Bird Scare Decoy, Fire Eye Bird Diverter Device.  But don’t use the provided croc clip, instead, use a clip that can be secured tightly around the cable and be able to withstand high winds.  These same bird deterrents can also be installed on a life preserver using a Whip Rod Kit to float on the water. Also to up the confusion level for the birds, as back up, add a couple of Zon Gun Mark 4 Cannon or the Zon Gun Electra Scare Cannon around the perimeter.

Stop birds from hitting windows with decals & visual bird deterrents

Millions of birds are killed, injured or stunned each year from colliding with glass window panels. There are ways to reduce or stop this problem once you understand why it is occurring. The most common types of birds to exhibit this behavior are robins, flickers and cardinals. Birds fly into windows for a variety of reasons some of them behavioral traits. This includes the understandable belief that the window is wide open so they fly full speed into it. This is similar to people walking into a sliding glass doors. Arguable if you could leave the window dirty it would reduce the likelihood of this happening.   

A very common instinctive behavioral traits for birds hitting windows occurs during the matting season during which time male birds are very territorial and when they see their reflection in the glass they think another bird is in their area so they go after it and try scare the other bird away and therefore strike the glass. Less common reasons for this behavior occurs when birds are disoriented from eating fermented berries or they’re sick.

How do you prevent birds from striking windows?
 In order to change the flickers, cardinals, robins, and other birds flight behavior you need to make sure the target window is visible to the birds to reduce the chance of a bird strike against the glass. Visual bird deterrents should be deployed on the windows and in some cases the ledge and surrounding areas.

 
Several bird control products are specially designed to help prevent bird window strikes: "Bird Alert for Windows". These bird deterrent decals help prevent birds from striking windows. Each Bird Alert decal has a special coating that reflects ultraviolet sunlight. This ultraviolet light is invisible to humans, but birds see it as a brilliant glow much like a stoplight. To the human eye, the decals appear as frosted or etched glass. Bird Alert decals are designed to be placed on the OUTSIDE of a window. Bird Alert decals can be applied to windows of homes or offices.

 
If you have a problem with Cardinal's sitting on windowsills looking at their reflection and continually pecking at the glass, apply a long Cardinal Alert Decal along the bottom of a window. The bird deterrent decal obstructs the Cardinal's reflection and forces the bird to move on. Use in conjunction with the Bird Alert Decals. In extreme cases 'bird friendly' Birdwire or BirdCoil can be used.

 
For large windows use BirdAlert UV Liquid to fill in the gaps between Bird Alert decals on windows-providing complete window protection. Bird Alert UV Liquid can also be used by people who prefer not to put stickers on their window panels. The liquid bird deterrent is easy to apply and lasts for up to 3 months and can be removed if desired

 
Other Visual products - Some birds appear to be on a suicide mission and will often ignore the Bird Alert decals. To further deter we recommend deploying a variety of proven visual bird deterrents at the problem areas. The Holographic Owl and Holographic Repel Strips, Scare Eye Octopus Bird Device and Firefly II provide a larger target to modify the bird's flight path. Ideally you should hang the deterrents out and away from the house so that they can freely move in the wind. The Swivel Bracket is inconspicuous, provides projection away from the window and refracts an array of colors affecting avian vision. For bad problems mount a Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent near the window. Birds will see a moving realistic looking cat and fly the other way.

* Audio / Visual Bird Scare products are not always effective on their own, particularly against non-migratory birds like pigeons and sparrows or where birds may be roosting rather than simply hanging out. A combination of audio / visual products should be deployed and re-located as birds react. Results vary depending on protected roosting conditions, food /water source. Overnight nesting sites typically require exclusionary products – netting, electric etc.
