Woodpecker Deterrent Decoy Effigy Instructions

WOODPECKER DECOY BIRD DETERRENT
How to Use this Life-Like, Life-Size, Wind Driven Woodpecker Deterrent

Woodpecker decoy bird deterrent scares off woodpeckersThe life-size woodpecker deterrent causes other woodpeckers to avoid the ‘occupied territory’. Woodpeckers are territorial, so an incoming woodpecker will typically cue onto the life-like moving decoy and avoid the area.

The Pileated Woodpecker Effigy is as life-like as the real bird. Full feathered, and measuring 18" in length, the life-size decoy is constructed using injection molded all weather material. Real feathers are used to simulate the appearance of a live bird. Ultra-Violet Paint is strategically applied to the decoy adding an additional visual component to deter the woodpecker. The UV paint contains a component that reflects the sun's ultra-violet rays enhancing the profile of the decoy and making the incoming woodpecker take notice. Ultra-Violet paint is similar to the UV reflection of bird's feathers, and woodpeckers can see in the complete UV spectrum.

The Pileated Woodpecker decoy is easily installed using our specially designed attachment that enables the decoy to move with the wind. Incoming woodpeckers are then cued to the decoy's movement. A new woodpecker visiting the area will typically spot the life-like moving decoy and move on to avoid a conflict with the decoy.

How to install

Position the Woodpecker Decoy Effigy at the infested area and/or near flight paths. Two woodpeckers are better than one - place one decoy on one side of the structure and another on the opposite end or other side. The Woodpecker decoy is designed to move a little in the wind, which gives them a life-life appearance.

To attach the woodpecker decoy, slip onto slightly angled screw or nail, and push onto the spring.

Woodpecker Decoy deters woodpeckers from building

The Pileated Woodpecker Effigy is not a heavy-duty decoy.  The design is purposely lightweight to promote movement. Accordingly, some precaution is required to prevent damage or loss of the decoy in high winds.

A 3.5" stainless steel wood screw is provided for easy installation. Drill a small pilot hole to accommodate the larger screw diameter. Attach effigy “spring” onto screw leaving slight clearance between feet and substrate. This space will indicate a bird in flight.

Or depending on the substrate install the decoy using a common nail (10d e.g.)  or wood screw of sufficient length / head diameter to maintain clearance between the legs and attachment surface. Secure with a zip tie in windy areas.  To hang from a tree branch or bracket use UV stable monofilament secured both to the neck and claws.

How to Use Most Effectively

We recommend deploying a combination of audio & visual bird deterrents at roosting areas around the problem area to increase the fear reaction and convince the problem birds there is a predator nearby.  If possible, hang or mount the woodpecker decoys and other visual deterrents in the flight path of the pest birds.

Woodpecker scare deterrents include – Holographic Owl, Mylar Flash Tape, Holographic Bird Scare Tape, Woodpecker Paint Additive, Scare Eye Balloons, Holographic Bird Scare Flash Strip, Woodpecker Distress & Predator calls cd and more audio-visual products.  Combining woodpecker decoys with one or two ‘flash’ deterrents and an audio deterrent (if possible) is best bet.

Where to use

Wood Telephone / Power Line Poles. Wood homes, cabins, decks, posts, ornamental trees.

NOTE: Woodpeckers are persistent and territorial. Audio / Visual Re-enforcement is recommended in addition to decoys to create a more realistic impression of predators and competition in the zone you want to protect.

For specific advice, email
mark@birdsgottago.com with brief description of roosting conditions.

No single product stands alone; a combination of Bird deterrents must be used with repeated reinforcement as necessary

Learn how to solve Crow Problems-Using Crow Deterrents

DEAD CROW DECOY
Get Rid of Pesky Crows with this Crow Deterrent

Deter aggressive crows by creating fear that there is a real predator in the area.  This full-feathered, life-like, exact-size crow replica decoy appears like a dead crow in a death pose to live birds, driving them from the area.

Installation Options

Position the Dead Crow Bird Deterrent at the infested / roosting area - rooftop or other flat areas. Two Crows are better than one - place one decoy face down and the other feet up.

Dead Crow Bird Deterrent
The dead crow decoy device can be displayed using the Swivel Bracket Kit or hung upside down from branches or wires. This will signal danger to other birds.

Keep the crows guessing - move the decoy randomly every day or two to create the illusion of a "fresh kill" by the predator.

Initially, birds approach the decoy, but usually leave when they see the unnatural position of the 'corpse' crow.

We recommend using a combination of audio & visual bird deterrents at roosting areas around the problem area to increase the fear reaction and convince the crows there is a predator nearby.  If possible, hang or mount the decoy in the flight path of the pest birds. Additional crow scare deterrents to use in combination with the dead crow decoy include – Mylar Bird Scare Flash Tape, Holographic Bird Scare Tape, Eagle Bird Deterrent Decoy, Bird Scare Eye Balloons, Zon Gun Bird Scare Propane Cannons, Optical Bird Gel, Holographic Bird Scare FlashStrip, BirdXPeller Pro Electronic Repeller etc..

The Gull Cat Bird Deterrent Decoy is also recommended as a re-enforcement to the crow decoy. The Scare Cat's head / tail movement and menacing teeth will alert the birds that a predator is present.

Want to move flocks of crows out of trees or off power lines?
The ground-breaking Bird Chaser bird deterrent is a visual bird scare device that deters problem crows & starlings from unwanted areas by reflecting irregular light beams from the sun.

The “Bird Distress calls cd,” an inexpensive CD audio option is also available which includes predator attack cries & bird alarm calls that are species specific for crows, starlings and grackles.

NOTE: Crows are extremely aggressive and typically very committed to remaining at a nesting site. Accordingly, we strongly recommend a combination of audio / visual products to re-enforce the crow decoy. Also, you will want to move the visual scare products regularly, especially in the beginning to enforce the idea a predator is near and fresh kills are occurring regularly.

A permanent, exclusionary (Bird Shock Scare Device, Bird Netting, etc) deterrent system is required if roosting continues.

For specific advice email mark@birdsgottago.com with a brief description of roosting conditions.

How do you keep vultures off your home and trees!

HOW TO KEEP VULTURES OFF ROOFS, FENCES, TREES AND MORE

Do you have a problem with Vultures damaging your rooftop or leaving behind smelly droppings?

We can help solve vulture infestations.

Flying Vulture
Homeowners typically experience problems with turkey and black vultures roosting on rooftops, porches, fences and trees.  A vulture’s natural tendency is to rip apart animal carcasses when searching for food. This same trait can lead to the destruction of rooftops, caulking and other exterior surfaces, causing extensive damage to structures. The bird droppings from turkey vultures are large, which creates extra clean-up costs and concerns over slip-and-fall liability.

Vultures are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so humane vulture control methods must be used to move them. Vultures are heavy, aggressive birds that defeat most standard bird control products including Stainless Steel Bird Spikes, Plastic Bird Spikes, Birdwire etc. however there are some permanent and temporary products that work to deter vultures from roosting.

Keep Vultures Off Your Roof, Deck and Fencing

There are many audio / visual / exclusionary options available to eliminate vulture roosting on your home or trees.

Dead Vulture Decoy
The most popular vulture deterrents are the Dead Vulture Decoys
which are often successful against small flocks and new infestations. The Vulture Deterrents should be placed in a downward position at each gable end, using a rigid bracket strong enough to hold the vulture decoy up and above the roof. To increase effectiveness, install a tensioned wire across the roof ridge connected to each bracket. The wire will disrupt the vulture from landing on the ridge. Hang the 18” Dead Vulture Decoy upside down in the agony pose from the wire, which enhances the effectiveness.

Augment this process by using a few (swiveling) Holographic Owls and the Rotating Attack Eagle. We also recommend placing Bird Free Bird Repellent Gel or BirdFire Optical Bird Gel Repellent pre-loaded dishes around the roof to give the appearance of fire! The Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent can be positioned down slope or sitting on porch railings. The Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent bobbing tail and head with menacing teeth provide an additional scare factor.

Rotating Attack Eagle Bird Deterrent
For large, long-standing vulture problems, we strongly recommend the Bird Shock Electrical System. Similar to a cattle fence, the harmless shock typically modifies all roosting behavior. The entire roof does not need to be covered, just the primary roosting areas. These roosting areas are usually the roof ridge and chimney. The Bird Shock Flex tracks are easily installed by using adhesive.

Keep Vultures Out of Trees

Turkey Vultures roosting in trees overnight obviously result in daytime roosting elsewhere on the property. Regardless of the defensive deterrent systems mentioned above for roofs etc., it's imperative that the vultures overnight nesting pattern is permanently disrupted.

There are two options. We have a highly successful species-specific audio system that has been used at a Sierra Leone United Nations Heliport, landfill and various rooftops. Depending on the size of the flock and/or commitment to the site, it is sometimes necessary to re-enforce the audio program with an exclusionary system. Contact us at mark@birdsgottago.com with details about your vulture problem and we can work with you to determine the best specific audio to deter the vultures.

Tree Shock Bird Deterrent

Installing Tree-Shock Electrical System at the primary and secondary roosting branches harmlessly shocks the leading alpha birds and alerts the entire flock to avoid the potential area.
After installing Tree Shock vulture deterrent it is important to create an unwelcoming zone for the birds by strategically placing visual products including the Dead Vulture Decoy (hang upside down to simulate the death position), and Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent in and around the trees and yard. Along with a Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent, the BirdFire Optical Bird Gel Repellents in pre-loaded dishes can be glued or taped along branches or fence to give the appearance of fire!

The Attack Eagle Decoy Scares Birds Convincing Them a Predator Is Near

Stationary & Rotating Options scare off starlings, pigeons, gulls and other pest birds - even small mammals.

Pest birds are keenly aware of raptor profiles. The Attack Eagle Decoy Repeller's attention to detail - size, shape, color patterns / markings and more importantly, the powerful beak and claws will quickly alert pest birds to avoid the area as they perceive it as a real predator threat.

The Attack Eagle is the ideal pest bird deterrent for almost any bird control situation - agriculture, small gardens, tailing ponds, cell towers and easily adaptable to any structure or architectural detail.

The new Rotating Attack Eagle Decoy Repeller with Distress & Predator Calls is a cost-effective, state of the art bird deterrent system. The Rotating Attack Eagle's threatening wing spread stance immediately causes fear in flocking pest birds.

Unlike the typical stationary ubiquitous 'closed wing' owl decoy, a nocturnal predator that subsists primarily on rodents and snakes, the moving Attack Eagle represents a real life-like threat to pest birds.

Installation: Attach the Attack Eagle to railings, posts, building sides, roofs, gable ends etc using L Brackets. The eagle can also be attached to the Swivel Bracket by small hook or monofilament under slung on wing span. Email photo of the problem area and description to mark@birdsgottago.com for specific installation advice.
